CENTRAL PARK
Central Park is a huge park in the heart of Manhattan. It has become one
of the most famous parks due to many appearances in movies and
television shows. This 843-acre park is located north of Midtown and
south of Harlem, between the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side.
It is the green oasis within the city, a place for everyone to escape
from city life, whether it’s just for a walk, for having a picnic or for
a round of speed-dating. Lots of sports can be done in Central Park:
jogging, cycling, fishing, rowing, swimming, skating, basketball and
ice-skating, just to name some. There are concerts, open-airs and movie
festivals taking place in Central Park, many of them free of charge.
The park was built in 1853 because the New Yorkers needed a green place
where they could escape from the noise and chaotic life in the city. It
was the first man-made public park in the United States. In the 1960s
and 1970s the park began to deteriorate: Littering, Vandalism,
Graffiti’s. The park became very dangerous at night and it looked like
it was out of control, until 1980 when they founded the Central Park
Conservancy, a private non-profit organization, which still runs the
park. Today the park is very clean and safe, even when it's dark.
